JOSE LUIS YAMUNAQUE

Jose Luis Yamunaque: Born in Chulucanas in northen Peru in 1951,Yamunaque learned the ways of the Pre-colombian ceramic tradition from his father and uncles. It was here that he learned to express the technique and knowledge of the renowned traditions of his community. The artist realized his formal studies at the National School of Ceramic in Buenos Aires,Argentina. Here,he beganhis quest to incorporate the ancient techiniques into modern context. Yamunaque then return to Peru where he worked as a restorer od archaeological ceramics in the National Instituto of Culture. He also worked in the Ministry of Industry,Tourism and Integration in Lima-Peru. He later studied at the Stituto Statal de Sesto FLorentinoin Florence, Italy. While in Italy he studied sculpture with master Salvatore Cipolla.Yamunaque then came to the United States and studied with the talented sculptor Carlos Dorrien of Wellesley College,Massachusetts.

Throughout his career he has served residencies at the Ceramics Program, The Office for the Arts at Harvard University, Wellesley College, and Massachesetts College of Art in Massachusett: Abilene, Texas: the Institute of Santa Ana In Buenos Aires, Argentina: as well as the School of Plastic Arts and Institute of Puerto Rican Culture in Puerto Rico. In Peru he taught at the National Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology under the auspices of UNESCO, the National University of san marcos, and the National Museum of History with the support of the Ministry of Education.
